Though to outskate and outwork Mtl this year.

But what about that Faulk kid. Impressive. I would love this guy on the Habs. He look strong as hell on the puck.

You have a great team this year. They just need to work.

He just needed to come out of the net, he was way too deep (that's what she said....I know).

The Canes played a dud like this 1st game of the season against Florida and put it behind them pretty quickly. I expect them to turn it around against Winnipeg on Thursday.

Hope that kid they call Skinner isn't out too long. He creates so much offense not just for himself, but teammates as well.

Have the hockey gods caught up with PK Subban for leaving his feet every time he goes to make a hit?

Matt, it seems that Minnesota is dangling Matt Cullen as trade bait for cap reasons. Do you think the recycling Rutherford makes any calls that direction. I think he is a better option at 3rd line center than Jokinen.

Good timing...When I find a few minutes between games I was going to write a blog about "needs assessment" now that we are 1/4 into a short season.

I think the Canes could use 2 things, ironically both things that I thought we needed late summer. To be clear, I am completely on board with Rutherford's aggressive move to spend every penny on Semin and deal with smaller things later.

I think the Canes have 2 needs:
1) 3rd line center. They need to somehow build a 3rd line that can hold its own at least defensively and kick in some offense. If you do it by getting a decent 3rd line center, you can move Jokinen up and that also frees Dwyer to help make the 3rd line better. Cullen is way overpriced at $3.5M, but it is only for the rest of this year. With the team playing decent, my hunch is that Rutherford will wait until a little closer to the deadline. I really like Tyler Bozak from Tor (also free agent this summer and only $1.4M prorated for rest of this year), but the Leafs are very much in the playoff chase, so unless that changes, I don't see them casting off the guy centering their top line which is playing well of late.

2) Blue line depth. Sanguinetti just isn't working. And past him is Jordan who is now about 25 minutes of ice time into his NHL career. Toni Lydman in Ana was in the doghouse earlier in the year, but has been playing regular minutes of late, so perhaps they are happier with him. Ana seems to deep defensively, so just maybe someone like him becomes available for a forward in return even if they continue to play well. Otherwise, the Canes are just looking for a capable 3rd pairing guy who is safe/sound with enough NHL experience.
